It's Never Too Early To Teach Your Child A Healthy Skin Care Routine

So many of the issues we have as adults could have been avoided if we were taught to properly care for our skin as a child. Starting early to teach your child the basics can save them a lot of frustration and save you a lot of money.

As soon as a child can wash their face on their own, developing the routine of cleansing and moisturizing in the morning and evening is essential. The sooner this routine becomes a habit the child will more likely stick with it throughout their lives. Most parents wonder what products to use on their child's face. When they are toddlers, the most sensitive products may be all they need. However, when they become adolescents and teenagers things can get a little tricky.

Depending on your child's development of hormones and how active their lifestyle is, more may be needed. Their skin may still be fragile at this time, but it also may need products that can breakdown excessive oils and dirt that have built up throughout the day. If you notice that the sensitive products your child is using are no longer enough for their skin, do not jump to more aggressive products so quickly. First, make sure that your child is following a basic healthy skin care routine. Then analyze what the problem is and what you are trying to accomplish.

Sometimes the solution can be as simple as washing their hands more often and keeping their hands out of their face. Also, changing their pillowcase multiple times a week or changing oily hair products can make a huge difference in their skin in a short period of time. If they play sports, they may need to cleanse their skin before and after playing. If they are producing excessive oils, adding a foaming or gel cleanser a few times a week may suffice.

The problem may also be connected to lack of hydration, poor eating habits, and other internal and external factors. The key is to try healthy lifestyle changes first and then slowly add products to their routine. Adding an entire line of new and aggressive products can do more harm than good to their skin.

Do not underestimate how helpful skin care professionals can be at this time. Parents do well to help their children develop a healthy relationship with an Esthetician and/or Dermatologist who can teach them how to properly care for their skin.

Helpful Tips

  • Be careful with internet/social media home remedies. There is a science to mixing products and if you do not know it, you can cause serious damage to your skin. There are plenty of over the counter or prescription products to help with various skin care concerns.

  • If money is a concern, reach out to local skin care schools and inquire about their age restrictions for facials. Students preforming the facials are carefully supervised by instructors and have to meet requirements to be able to perform facials on clients.
